London-Based Soviet Spy and Klaus Fuchs Discuss Status of England’s Progress in Building Atomic Bomb, 1941

The following is a decrypted Top Secret message from the head of the London rezidentura to the Intelligence Directorate of the Red Army General Staff on work in England to create an atomic bomb. The message provides information provided by Agent “Baron” (Simon Davidovich Kremer) regarding his meeting with German physicist-turned-spy Klaus Fuchs (covername “Fuka”) on the state of England’s efforts in building an atomic bomb. As a side note, Fuchs was also given the covername “Otto” by other assets.

While the message is intended for the eyes of the head of the Soviet GRU (then known as the Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Red Army), according to the Russian Wikipedia website, that position was vacant at the time the message was dispatched (F.I. Golikov – July 1940-July 1941, A.P. Panfilov – October 1941-November 1942). The author signed off with the covername “Brion” – a pseudo whose identity is said to remain classified in Russian archives, but is easily discoverable as Ivan Andreyevich Sklyarov, a GRU operative and Soviet military attaché to Great Britain from 1940 to 1946.

Handwritten notes on the original document are included on the translation. They include instructions for the head of Department 5, the special operations section of the GRU.
