Russian Destroyer Severomorsk Conducts ASW Exercise in Barents Sea En Route to Arctic

A press release dated 19 August 2025 from the Russian Federation Ministry of Defense indicates that the large ASW ship (Udaloy-class destroyer) Severomorsk, on her way to the Arctic for a long deployment as part of Northern Fleet expeditionary detachment, took part in antisubmarine warfare maneuvers in the northern regions of the Barents Sea. The maneuvers included the participation of a Ka-27 ASW helicopter operating from the Severomorsk’s deck.

The crew of the anti-submarine helicopter drilled in various techniques of searching for and tracking submarines. At a distance of about 60 km from the ship, the pilots performed a variety of activities for visual, radar, magnetometric, and hydroacoustic submarine search. The search was carried out using the standard radar equipment and the helicopter’s on-board sonar.

Upon receiving targeting data, the combat crew of the missile-artillery section of the ASW ship fired the main anti-submarine weapon system at the designated coordinates through computer simulation.

The exercise was conducted under the supervision of the commander of the combat ship detachment, Captain I Rank Stanislav Varik. Detachment flagship specialists, combat crews of the combat information center, sonar operator groups, navigators, and personnel from the mine-torpedo unit participated were all participants in the exercise.

According to the RF MinDef press release, the Arctic expedition of the Northern Fleet ships and support vessels is aimed at ensuring the protection of the interests of the Russian Federation in the Arctic. The detachment includes the Severomorsk antisubmarine warfare ship, the large landing ship Alexander Otrakovsky, the rescue tug Pamir, and the tanker Sergei Osipov.
