On 29 August 2025, the Russian Ministry of Defense issued two maritime closure areas in the Barents Sea and Motovskiy Zaliv for “special operations,” presumably involving the Russian Federation Navy (given the number of naval bases within a day’s sailing range – see images below).
Note: The term “special operations” is not meant to imply activities involving the participation of SpetsNaz troops. It is a direct translation from Russian to English, and can also (somewhat awkwardly) be translated as “special works” or “special efforts.” Given the probable military nature of the activities, “special operations” is the best translation for the Russian phrase.
Should you find yourself within range of the activities, and are able to photograph the participants in detail – without putting yourself in harm’s way, mind you – we will be happy to purchase a piping hot cup of coffee for you and one friend in exchange for those images. We will spare no expense – we’re talking the 20 ounce cups here. But black. Sugar and cream are on you.
It may involve underwater activities, so be prepared.
